The trio
Led by Ecuadorian composer José Pino, the trio moves between written material and improvisation. Pino performs on bass, placing rhythm at the centre of a formation in which repertoire can be reworked from one performance to the next.
Brazilian music has been a longstanding part of Pino’s musical formation, alongside the music of his native Ecuador and his work in jazz. These references enter the trio not as separate influences, but as material for arranging, playing and improvising together.
The line-up may change according to the programme, while the trio format remains constant: three musicians working at close range, with enough structure to define the music and enough openness for it to change on stage.
